Steve Walters with his Second Turkey of the Spring
Steve Walters sent me this photo a couple weeks ago of this big tom, his second archery bird of the season. Steve has been making the most of his weekend hunts, with two turkeys and a hog already this year. Here is the morning event in Steve’s words:
“Called in a group right a sun rise, but they hung up just out of view from ground blind and decoy. Went old school and stalked within view to setup up again (just the decoy and sitting under a tree in the brush/poison oak). I called again (mouth called, yelped twice) and this time they came in close. The decoy was 20 yards away and this Tom (plus two others) strutted into 20-25 yards. I waited ’til their tail fans blocked their eyes and drew my bow. The arrow few perfect and passed threw the vitals of the closest one (all were about the same size). After flopping around, it was over in 10 seconds.”
This nice tom had a 10.5″ beard, 1 1/4″ spurs and weighed close to 20 pounds. Thanks again to Steve for always keeping us posted on his excursions. Below are some photos Steve took during his hunt. Feel free to send photos of any hunts to zwalton5@hotmail.com and I’ll share them with other hunters!

Relentless365 Spring 2011 Issue
Check out the newest issue of Relentless365, on newsstands now. The Spring 2011 issue is full of informative statistics about the upcoming California big game draw, successful hunting stories and, of course, my quarterly column on better bowhunting called “In-Sight.”
This issue, I wrote about the benefits of spring for a cooped-up bowhunter. Springtime offers bowhunters a plethora of options. From turkey hunting, to carp fishing, to countless archery tournaments, spring is one of my favorite times of the year to be a bowhunter.

Another Day in the Turkey Woods

Jody Cyr and his Nice Tom

Jody with Another Bird

Jason Latronica (and his son, Tyler) with a Spring Gobbler
This photo is from Jason Latronica, who just took his first ever animal with archery equipment. It didn’t take Jason long, as this was his first turkey hunt and with the help of his son, Tyler, on the box call, they made quick work of this nice tom.
According to Bill Latronica (Jason’s dad/Tyler’s grandfather), he is not sure who was excited more about shooting the turkey–father or son. It looks like we have two hunters now hooked to archery!
Congratulations guys on a beautiful bird and I hope your future bowhunts are just as exciting! If you have had a successful spring turkey hunt, or any hunting-related event, send your photos to zwalton5@hotmail.com to be entered into the Photo of the Month Contest.
