I hope everyone had a great 2011! Each year, after the calendar changes, I put together a review of all the bucks, bears, bulls, birds, and more, that everyone has taken and post them together. Click on the “Read the rest of the entry” below and scroll through the 2011 season on the Weekend Bowhunter website.
Personally, this was a great year for me. But there were some great animals taken this year by friends and family: Troy Elam’s 367″ elk, Dad’s 342″ elk, Shawn Wood’s 170″ mule deer, Paul Schultheis’ and Darin Ball’s 160+” California muleys, just to name a few. Thanks everyone for sending your photos and making this a wonderful year! Enjoy the Pics below…

Jon Yokley Kansas Whitetail 2011

Jon Yokley Kansas Turkey 2011
Congratulations to Jon Yokley, who just returned from a bonsai trip to Kansas. Jon made the most of his short trip by arrowing a nice buck and a turkey (8-inch beard). With a limited time frame for his hunt, he made the 12-hour drive from his home in Arizona and brought home some meat in time for Thanksgiving.
Jon is a dedicated bowhunter as well as the national pro staff director for S4 Gear. You can check out more of Jon’s trophy photos at Arizona Antler Junkeys and for more information on S4 Gear at the website (https://www.s4gear.com/). Thanks for sharing your success photos Jon and congratulations on a great year!

If you are like me, you couldn’t imagine a world without hunting. And the deer species that is most dear to my heart, is the Columbian blacktail. That is why I make it a priority to support as many conservation organizations each year, to ensure that habitat vital to the flourishing of all game species is protected. The Blacktail Foundation is no exception.
This year, the Oregon Foundation for Blacktail Deer is holding their annual archery shoot to benefit the blacktail species and habitat of the state. The organization has been around for a long time and is struggling to maintain its existence. Your support is very important!
The shoot will be held on July 30-31 at the Benton Bowman range, which is located off of the Kings’ Valley Highway (223), just north of Highway 20. In addition to the shoot, there will be an auction and raffle. Oregon’s blacktail hunting legend Larry D. Jones, has donated a turkey hunt and is just one of the hunts available to win at the event.
Registration opens at 7 a.m. and is $15 for adults ($25 to shoot both days) and 12 years or under shoot for free. The range is going to stay open until 3 p.m. on Sunday.
For more information, check out the Oregon Foundation for Blacktail Deer website. There is a list of contacts and a flyer for last year’s event, which has a map to the range.

Photo of the Month-May 2011
Congratulations to Photo of the Month Contest winner Steve Walters! Steve has been a huntin’ fool this spring, with several hogs and turkeys taken with his Mathews’ Z7. I’d like to thank Steve again for sharing all of his hunting photos with us throughout the spring. It has been a pleasure to post them for others to see.
If you would like to submit photos for the monthly contest, please send them to zwalton5@hotmail.com. Anyone can enter, and anyone can win!

Steve Walters with his Second Turkey of the Spring
Steve Walters sent me this photo a couple weeks ago of this big tom, his second archery bird of the season. Steve has been making the most of his weekend hunts, with two turkeys and a hog already this year. Here is the morning event in Steve’s words:
“Called in a group right a sun rise, but they hung up just out of view from ground blind and decoy. Went old school and stalked within view to setup up again (just the decoy and sitting under a tree in the brush/poison oak). I called again (mouth called, yelped twice) and this time they came in close. The decoy was 20 yards away and this Tom (plus two others) strutted into 20-25 yards. I waited ’til their tail fans blocked their eyes and drew my bow. The arrow few perfect and passed threw the vitals of the closest one (all were about the same size). After flopping around, it was over in 10 seconds.”
This nice tom had a 10.5″ beard, 1 1/4″ spurs and weighed close to 20 pounds. Thanks again to Steve for always keeping us posted on his excursions. Below are some photos Steve took during his hunt. Feel free to send photos of any hunts to zwalton5@hotmail.com and I’ll share them with other hunters!
