          Relentless365 Winter 2010 Issue

Check out the latest issue of Relentless365, to see my first column, “In-Sight.” In this issue, I discuss the advantages of archery-only tags in California and how they helped me to take two nice bucks this past season.

I have been hoping to write a column for quite a while now and Relentless365 editor, Brent Miller, gave me the opportunity a couple months ago. Relentless365 is in its second year of publication and is the best magazine dedicated to California hunting available. It is available at several sporting good stores throughout the state, or you can go to the magazine’s website and order your subscription. The magazine prints four issues a year and each will have an edition of “In-Sight.”

I’d like to thank the staff at Relentless365 for the support and hope that everyone enjoys the column. Let me know what you think of the column, and the magazine, at zwalton5@hotmail.com.

Posted on: October 13th, 2010 Wild Game…It’s What’s For Dinner

                               Success Never Tasted So Good

Winter can come anytime now because the freezers are stocked and full of wild game meat. This past weekend my parents and I processed all of our archery kills for this season and we have no shortage of meat. With the two elk and four blacktail we have taken this year, we cut and wrapped more than 300 packages of steaks, roasts, burger and sausage.

Every year we get together and have a meat processing day. Over the past five or six seasons, the day has turned into quite an ordeal as we have put more and more animals on the ground. This is great because we love elk and deer meat.

It may be a time-consuming process but it allows us to spend time together and recall the successful (and unsuccessful) hunts of the year. Also, when you take care of your own game start to finish, you know exactly what quality of meat you pull out of the freezer. Read the rest of this entry »

Trail Cams…Worth Their Weight in Gold

I can’t complain because I have had a great year in California. However, I wish I had one more tag after seeing this guy on my trail camera.

I pulled the memory card this weekend and about dropped my jaw when this bad boy popped on the screen. The good news…he looks young. Maybe next year he’ll be even bigger!

Posted on: September 14th, 2010 In Search of the Perfect Hunting Knife…

                         Havalon Replaceble-blade Hunting Knife

There are many items of hunting gear I have labeled as perfect for me. My Hoyt bow, Swarovski binoculars and other such items have a permanent spot on my packing list before a hunt and I will probably never change them. However, one item in my pack I have changed more frequently than I do socks–my knife.

In the past 10 years, I have been through more than a dozen different manufactures and models to find the perfect hunting knife. Schrade, Buck, Kershaw, SOG, Gerber, you name the company. European blades, Japanese blades and American blades, all have spent time in my pack and all have found their way back out. For two seasons, I even carried around a folding, drywall knife from my construction belt. Don’t get me wrong, I have found some very good knives, but they haven’t been perfect; for me.

Now I don’t know what the perfect knife is, or else I would own it. However, I know what attributes I look for in a hunting blade. First of all, a sharp, durable, stout blade that holds an edge is a must. Next, I prefer blades that are not heavy or bulky. But I would sacrifice space and weight in my pack if the blade is worth it. Lastly, since I am lazy when it comes to knives, I like blades that are easy to sharpen.

Posted on: September 14th, 2010 Pope & Young Article

I recently had an article published in the Pope & Young Spring 2010 magazine. If you are bowhunter, or outdoorsman, I recommend checking out the club and considering a membership. I have been a member since 1997 and my dad has been a member for 30 years. We both consider the work of the record-keeping organization to be vital in the fight to preserve bowhunting and the outdoor way-of-life.
