Adam Hayden Desert Mule Deer 2011

Congratulations to Adam Hayden for winning the first Photo of the Month contest for 2012. Adam made a nice shot to take his first desert muley this past December. Adam works for Scott Archery when he is not chasing deer.

A special thanks to Jon Yokley for sending in this picture. Jon helped Adam on this hunt to take a great buck! Anyone can enter the Photo of the Month contest. Just send any photo related to hunting, archery or wildlife to zwalton5@hotmail.com. Good luck!

Jim Walton Coues’ 2012

He did it again! Every year Dad goes to Arizona and every year before he goes, he says, “I would really like to take a nice desert muley this year.” But every year, he can’t help himself and he ends up shooting a nice Coues’ deer. This year was no exception.

My parents have been going to Arizona every winter for more years than I can remember. Because of a delay on one of Dad’s jobs this fall, he was afraid a trip to the desert was out of the question this year. But after working hard to catch up, he found a week in his schedule and Mom and Dad were on their way.

They arrived a few days after I had to return home and started scouting the area. A couple days into the hunt, Dad went and set up a ground blind in the same spot I shot my buck about a week earlier. The first day he sat the waterhole, a coyote was his only visitor. One arrow from Dad’s Mathews made sure that coyote would harass any more deer.

The second day Dad sat the blind, he had a slow morning, with only a cow coming to drink. Then at about 12:30 p.m., he caught a glimpse of a deer heading down the bank. Dad grabbed his bow and saw the buck was a shooter. With the deer quartering to him, Dad settled his pin between the buck’s shoulders and touched the release.

The arrow crashed through the buck’s mid-section, as he catapulted himself into the middle of the pond. With a couple leaps, the deer crossed the water and stopped on the opposite bank. From there, Dad watched the buck fall within a few seconds and his seventh Coues’ buck with a bow was on the ground.

The following day, Dad scored the buck at 91″. What a deer! Congratulations Dad on another great Coues’. Someday you will get your big desert muley, until then, a string of great Coues’ deer will be a nice consolation prize :)

                     Rhonda Walton Javelina 2012

Mom and Dad just returned from their annual trip to Arizona, where they were again both able to fill the tags with stinky javelina. Hunting javelina with a bow is one of the most fun hunts there is. If you have not had a chance to do it, I highly recommend it.

Dad took his hog from inside of 20 yards, while Mom made a perfect 30-yard shot on her pig. As you can see from the pictures, both were nice size javelina. Congrats Mom and Dad on another great trip and a wonderful season in the field!

Jon Yokley Mule Deer 2012

Jon Yokley Javelina 2012

Arizona bowhunting guru Jon Yokley sent me these photos of his January archery successes. Jon is a very accomplished archer and I don’t know of a tag he has left unfilled since I met him. From bears, elk and deer to javelina and turkeys, Jon finds a way to zip an arrow through it.

With these two animals, Jon is closing in on 100 critters with his bow. Good luck Jon, I’m sure you’ll get there in no time. In addition to being a die-hard bowhunter, he also is on several pro staff and is the director of pro staffers for S4 Gear. Check out more of Jon’s bowhunts on his website www.arizonaantlerjunkys.com.

Congrats Jon on a great start to 2012!

Bill Latronica Javelina 2012

Connie Latronica Javelina 2012

Connie and Bill Latronica recently returned from their trip to Arizona, where they enjoyed the nice weather and the excellent hunting opportunities. If you have followed weekendbowhunter.com over the past couple years, you no doubt recognize the Latronicas. They have spent a lot of time over the past several years chasing animals around and always find a way to bring one home.

This was Bill’s first Coues’ with a bow and he took a very nice one. Congrats Bill, Coues’ bucks are not easy to come by with a bow! And Connie never leaves Arizona without filling her pig tag.

Congratulations to the Latronicas on another great season. Look forward to seeing what you guys do next year! If anyone has outdoor or hunting photos they would like to share from this past season, please send them to zwalton5@hotmail.comand be entered in the monthly photo contest.
