Trail Cams…Worth Their Weight in Gold

I can’t complain because I have had a great year in California. However, I wish I had one more tag after seeing this guy on my trail camera.

I pulled the memory card this weekend and about dropped my jaw when this bad boy popped on the screen. The good news…he looks young. Maybe next year he’ll be even bigger!

Posted on: September 20th, 2010 The Rarest Elk of All…Tule!

Paul Schulteis with his California Tule Elk

Congratulations to my buddy Paul Schulteis who just took this great tule elk on Sunday. He was one of the lucky California hunters to draw a tule elk tag in the Owens Valley area and certainly made the most of his opportunity.

Although there is little hunting pressure in the area, the hunt is by no means easy. Nine hard days of belly crawling through sage brush, wading swamps and busting through tule patches, resulted in an incredible bull for Paul.

Even with broken brow tines on each side, the bull should easily qualify for Pope & Young’s minimum. Congratulations to Paul, and everyone who helped him on the hunt, on a once-in-a-lifetime trophy. Read the rest of this entry »

Posted on: September 14th, 2010 In Search of the Perfect Hunting Knife…

                         Havalon Replaceble-blade Hunting Knife

There are many items of hunting gear I have labeled as perfect for me. My Hoyt bow, Swarovski binoculars and other such items have a permanent spot on my packing list before a hunt and I will probably never change them. However, one item in my pack I have changed more frequently than I do socks–my knife.

In the past 10 years, I have been through more than a dozen different manufactures and models to find the perfect hunting knife. Schrade, Buck, Kershaw, SOG, Gerber, you name the company. European blades, Japanese blades and American blades, all have spent time in my pack and all have found their way back out. For two seasons, I even carried around a folding, drywall knife from my construction belt. Don’t get me wrong, I have found some very good knives, but they haven’t been perfect; for me.

Now I don’t know what the perfect knife is, or else I would own it. However, I know what attributes I look for in a hunting blade. First of all, a sharp, durable, stout blade that holds an edge is a must. Next, I prefer blades that are not heavy or bulky. But I would sacrifice space and weight in my pack if the blade is worth it. Lastly, since I am lazy when it comes to knives, I like blades that are easy to sharpen.

Posted on: September 14th, 2010 Pope & Young Article

I recently had an article published in the Pope & Young Spring 2010 magazine. If you are bowhunter, or outdoorsman, I recommend checking out the club and considering a membership. I have been a member since 1997 and my dad has been a member for 30 years. We both consider the work of the record-keeping organization to be vital in the fight to preserve bowhunting and the outdoor way-of-life.

Tom Elam with a Monster Archery Bull

Congrats to Tom Elam, who took this massive bull last week. This 7×6 gross scores 355″ Pope & Young and has more than 60 inches of mass! Even though Tom is an Arizona resident, this is his largest bull elk to date.

Congratulations Tom on an incredible bull! If you have been successful on a recent hunt, send your photos to zwalton5@hotmail.com to be entered in to the photo contest for archery-related prizes. Read the rest of this entry »
