Posted on: January 29th, 2010 Monster Coues’ Buck

I just received this video from Amanda Moors at CouesWhitetail.com. This is an incredible buck she videoed during last year’s rut. The outstanding footage is some of the best I’ve seen for a Coues’ buck of this size.

Thanks Amanda for sharing the video. I recommend that everyone check out Amanda’s site at http://www.coueswhitetail.com/. It’s an excellent place to find everything related to Coues’ and Coues’ deer hunting.

As you have read in my previous posts, I had a great trip to Arizona this year. One of the things that made it so great was the fact that we had a new bowhunter in camp this year. Angela just got a bow this past spring and she quickly learned to shoot. And shoot well.

A year earlier, she took her first buck with a rifle. This year, she was ready to try bowhunting. And since I had filled both my tags in Arizona, I was more than happy to hunt with her.

We decided to concentrate on hunting near water because of the extremely dry conditions. And it was productive for us. Read the rest of this entry »

                                   Vegas face 3-spot target

For as much as I love archery, I hate shooting indoor. I don’t know if it’s because of the repetitive action, my problems with concentration, or the fact that I’m not very good at it, but indoor tournaments are hard for me. I think that’s why I rarely shoot them.

But Sunday I did it anyway and made the trip to Impact Archery in Clovis. I was actually excited about shooting it this year. I had not shot an indoor tournament in four years and I wanted to see if I had gotten any better. I hadn’t. Read the rest of this entry »

                                 Zack Walton Javelina 2010

The desert has some of the most beautiful sunrises

Although I love hunting mule deer in Arizona, I never head down there without a javelina tag. These little critters were made for bowhunting and are a blast to chase. At age 10, they were the first big game animal I hunted and I have had a ton of fun hunting these pint-sized pigs with huge personalities.

This year was no exception. A few days after I shot my buck, my buddy Troy glassed up a herd of pigs about 300 yards away. The group was feeding in a perfect place to stalk. It was flat ground that had clumps of mesquite and cactus separated almost uniformly every 10 to 15 yards. In between the patches was red dirt with little to no ground cover. It looked as though it was landscaped. Read the rest of this entry »

                              Zack Walton Mule Deer 2010

Dad and I just returned from our annual trip to the deserts of Arizona. It is wonderful to escape the fog of the Central Valley and enjoy the arid climate and liberal sunshine during the dead of winter. This year I was only able to sneak away for a week. But I managed to make the most of it and had a great time, as usual.

I flew down and met Dad after he had been hunting for a few days. I wish I could join him from beginning to end of each hunt but my schedule does not allow that anymore. However, it is nice to send all my hunting gear with him ahead of time and get picked up at the airport. I’ll try not to get used to it. :)

The first couple days, I glassed up a few small bucks and even passed a forked horn I walked up on at 36 yards. The mule deer were in full rut, and I wanted to see what bucks were roaming. On the third evening, I was presented with an opportunity I could not pass. Read the rest of this entry »
