The Kansas trip is officially over. Last week, my parents got back from Kansas after a wonderful trip. And I know it sounds cliché, but Mom came through with a last day buck.
The evening before they were set to leave, Mom hunted a new stand. The suspense didn’t even have time to build. Within 10 minutes, a buck crossed under the tree and a perfect shot from 12 yards put down Mom’s first whitetail buck. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s official. I’m addicted. I’m incapable of being saved now that I’ve been in the middle of the November whitetail rut in the Midwest. I never saw the allure to whitetails that it seemed the rest of the nation’s bow hunters experienced. But after two great trips to Kansas, I suffer from the same affliction as millions of archers–Whitetailitis. It can’t be cured. It can only be treated with routine stints in a tree stand or ground blind looking over prime big buck country.

On the fourth night, Dad sat the same stand where I had the encounter with the split G-2 buck. It turned out his sit would be more productive than mine.
About 20 minutes after a rattling sequence, Dad heard a deer coming out of the creek bottom. He caught a glimpse of antlers and readied his bow. This was only the beginning of the excitement. It took the buck a while to work his way through the trees into shooting range. By the time the buck stepped into the open, Dad was overcome with anticipation. The buck was close enough that all seven pins of Dad’s sight were on the buck when he shot. I guess the buck wasn’t quite close enough.

Just got back from my second trip to Kansas where I had an incredible time. Mom and I flew out and were picked up by Dad who had driven 1800 miles with the trailer so that we would have all of our “stuff.”
